Massey Energy Environmental Policy

Massey Energy operates in Central Appalachia.  Our operations are located near the very same communities where our members live and raise their families.

Our mission is to be responsible citizens in those communities and responsive to the needs of our environment.  We believe that a healthy environment includes clean air and clean water as well as good jobs and good schools.  We see no conflict in our beliefs.

To accomplish our mission, we will seek to meet or exceed all environmental laws and strive for continual improvement in our environmental compliance programs.  Specifically, we will endeavor to:

· Assign individual responsibility and accountability to all members for environmental compliance in their work areas and provide them with the tools to meet their responsibilities.

· Communicate to all members and visitors the environmental standards that apply at our operations and to their activities while on our property.

· Train our members about our environmental compliance program and the performance expected from them.

· Monitor and assess our environmental performance and implement changes to our environmental programs to achieve our goal of continual improvement.

· Design our mines to exceed the current legal requirements for pollution prevention and control.

· Work with private groups and public agencies to identify needs, such as water and sewage projects or compatible post-mining land uses, that we might address through our mining, mitigation or reclamation activities.

· Continually search for new and better ways to achieve our environmental policy and mission.
