Massey Energy is the proud corporate sponsor of the annual Massey Energy Hatfield-McCoy Senior Bowl. The bowl is a football tradition in the Tug Valley and signals the start of the high school football season. The game pits last year’s graduating seniors from West Virginia against their counterparts from Kentucky.
The game is a much-anticipated opportunity for the communities to gather and enjoy a favorite pastime in Central Appalachia – high school football. Matewan High School’s Tiger Stadium plays host to the annual event, and the stadium is always filled to capacity with avid fans from throughout the Tug Valley.
At halftime of the football game, last year’s area high school homecoming queens gather to compete for the title of Miss Massey Energy Hatfield-McCoy Senior Bowl. The winner is crowned by Miss West Virginia. And last year’s senior cheerleaders get one last chance to pump up the crowd.
In addition to the fun and excitement for the participants and the surrounding community, the Massey Energy Hatfield-McCoy Senior Bowl provides funding for college scholarships and improvements to local school athletic facilities.
