Massey Energy is Central Appalachian's largest coal company and the nation’s fourth largest coal company based on produced coal revenue.  The Company produces 35% of all coal mined in the Central Appalachian region, and with more than 5,500 Members, Massey Energy is one of West Virginia's largest private-sector employers.

At 2.3 billion tons, our reserve base is nearly three times as large as the next-closest competitor. It is estimated that Massey controls more than one-third of Central Appalachian coal reserves, which contain a large percentage of the country's low sulfur, high Btu bituminous coal and the majority of the country's metallurgical coal.  Of our 2.3 billion ton reserves, an estimated 40% are metallurgical grade coal reserves.

In 2007, Massey sold 39.9 million tons of coal, including 27 million tons sold to utilities and 4 million tons sold to industrial customers.  By offering coal of both steam and metallurgical grades, we are able to serve a diverse customer base.
